Mission Statement—written by students: Our purpose as students of GECS is to create a community where we all feel comfortable and safe, learn by following our interests and thinking
independently, and are innovative and aware. We will accomplish this by using alternative learning methods, such as creative projects that incorporate our personal interests and ideas. We are responsible for ourselves and for our school. We will feel comfortable and safe by treating each other and ourselves with respect. We will do this so that we are prepared for life outside of school.
The Golden Eagle High School Program offers students an opportunity to become part of a thriving, innovative, and intensive democratic learning community. Based on a model of education created by the nationally recognized Minnesota New Country School and supported by the Gates Foundation’s EdVisions Cooperative, our program features a small learning community, a democratic student government, and an emphasis on project-based learning in conjunction with traditional classroom experiences.
Facilitated by two credentialed teachers and one instructional aide, our students fulfill their state graduation requirements through a combination of classes, community experiences, and interest-led projects. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the community as part of their education. The Golden Eagle High School staff works with students to develop partnerships with community organizations where students can pursue their interests and gain valuable work experience under the mentorship of professionals in their field of interest. Many students also take advantage of the wide variety of classes offered at College of the Siskiyous.
