Past excursions have included overnight trips to the Humboldt Coast, a watershed and estuary study in Coos Bay, Oregon, and a survey of volcanic features in Lassen National Park.

Community & Citizenship:  Students are actively involved in all areas of school governance.  The students begin the year with a Constitutional Convention, an event in which the students write a school constitution for the year.  As the year goes on, the entire school community meets once a week to discuss issues and make decisions for the school.  A Leadership class gives interested students an active voice in determining policies and developing programs within the school.  Students learn mediation skills, and work to improve the community and solve problem through democratic process and discussion..

Visual & Performing Arts:  Program co-Manager Dave Theno teaches a twice weekly visual arts class and tutors students in music theory, instrumental performance and song writing.

Students may choose from various computer and web-based language programs, including German, Spanish, French, Japanese and many others. Spoken language support is available in German, Spanish and French. Students meet weekly in small groups to discuss grammar and practice conversational skills. Language study courses change yearly, depending on student interest and involvement..

Project-Based Learning:  A cornerstone of our academic program is the student-directed project, a mode of learning that integrates time & task management, research skills, reading, writing, presentation skills, and the ability to bring together many different disciplines into one coherent process of learning.  Students use this process to look deeply into subjects that interest them, while using many academic skills at once.  Students learn to balance the rigor of academic learning with the relevance of pursuing their interests and life goals.

Other academic opportunities: Students are encouraged to organize additional classes and seminars.  Past High School Program offerings have included web-design, cooking and drama classes.
