In October, fifteen 5th and 6th grade students participated in French Creek Outdoor School.  They participated in many activities including field studies, swimming, kayaking, group skits and performances, and a challenge course that included climbing ropes and team events.  The students learned to identify trees specific to the area, find the age of a tree, identify insects and vegetation around creek areas, and identify rocks of the area and how the area mountains/volcanoes were formed. They wrote poems, skits, and mimes and performed them for the camp.  Our students were placed in cabins with kids from other small schools in the county.  They were supervised in their cabins by a high school counselor or interns from Southern Oregon University.  The group attended a spectacular singing performance by a local family from Scott Valley. They also saw and demonstration on sled dog racing and got to meet two sled dogs, one which ran in the Iditarod.  The last night at camp, the group took a night hike to a place to observe the night sky.   Our students had a lot of fun, learned some new exciting things, and made some new friends.
