GALILEO
The students of GECS are assessed in a variety of ways. Upon
enrollment, students take a test in Galileo, which is a computer-based testing and
teaching tool. Each student takes the online English and Math tests for
their grade level at the beginning and end of each school year. The
tests have 45 questions each, are grade-level California
Standards-based, and take about 30 minutes each to complete.
Galileo breaks test scores down by individual standard and concept. The
program can also generate slide-show type lessons and Internet links
for the concepts missed on the assessment and remediation tool.
We are using this program to identify students' weak points and provide
needed curriculum and instruction in those areas. It is also a great
resource for program planning school-wide.
Because the STAR scores are only available long after the end of the
school year, Galileo is a necessary diagnostic tool for planning
student studies. The Galileo tests can be taken any time to show
improvement or mastery. Galileo scores are incorporated into the GECS
8th grade graduation requirements, and the tests are also used, in
addition to other diagnostic tools, in tracking students in and out of
the mandatory skills classes.
